Review: Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One is hauntingly good. A moody and tragic take that focusses on the human loss of life. The WWII setting focalises Godzilla’s original meaning as a metaphor for nuclear devastation masterfully. Godzilla is huge, terrifying, and juxtaposed against a harsh yet intimate painting of Japan.

Although filmed entirely in 2.39:1 aspect ratio, this is still worth seeing in IMAX. I was astounded at just how immersive the movie was despite it not expanding to fill the IMAX screen.

This is undoubtedly a crowd-pleasing movie, with multiple breathtaking moments where Godzilla is just absolutely huge on screen. It delivers on action, spectacle and room-shaking sound.

I also want to thank Sugoi Australia for the screening. They are brand new distributor launched in 2023 across Australia and New Zealand. Focused exclusively on licensing Japanese and Anime content for the Australian market, they have brought titles like ‘The First Slam Dunk’ to theatres here. If not for them, Godzilla Minus One and so many other titles may not have screened locally!

They are doing excellent work and put on a particularly impressive show for the IMAX screening. I especially loved that they opened the screening to everyone to buy tickets, which meant that the audience was filled with hardcore fans who absolutely loved being there. Loads of cheers, excitement at the photo ops, and hugely positive energy from the audience that night who rocked up in Godzilla merch and were stoked to be there. It’s wonderful to see a distributor focus on their core fanbase for special screenings as many other distributors leave little room for fans at previews.

You can find Sugoi at their website, or follow them on Instagram, on YouTube, on Facebook, or on Twitter.
