‘Dynamic Duo’: DC Studios is making an animated Robins Movie

DC Studios is partnering with WB Pictures Animation to produce a brand-new animated film about Batman’s Robins. The film will tell the origins stories of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.

Matt Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho will produce the movie, and hired Matthew Aldrich to write the script. Aldrich previously wrote Pixar’s Coco.

Swaybox Studios blend CGI and puppetry to create unique animated films

The animation is being created by a new studio called Swaybox Studios. Swaybox is pioneering a brand-new form of animation that blends puppetry with CGI and digital animation to create an uncanny photorealistic look. Their challenge viewers’ notions of how puppets look, move, and feel and is described as “long-form storytelling that is visually breathtaking, dynamically expressive, and—above all—more human.”

The principals of Swaybox Studios are Arthur Mintz, Theresa Andersson, Noah Scruggs, Chris Armand, and Thomas Woodruff. Founders Mintz and Andersson have been business partners since 2009 have proficient animation resumes. Mintz previously worked on animation for James and the Giant Peach. While Andersson has appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson while promotin a one-person puppet show.

This is the first project that DC Studios and WB Pictures Animation will partner on to produce together. DC Studios was newly minted in late 2022 under the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran. While WB Pictures Animation recently underwent a rebranding in June 2023, where Bill Damaschke was appointed President.

Deadline has confirmed that ‘Dynamic Duo’ won’t be connected to Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. It’s unclear at this point whether it will be connected to the main DCU, or exist as an Elseworlds story.
