Anaconda (2025) Review: This riotously self-aware movie within a movie will have you rolling with laughter

Anaconda (2025) is a massive laugh out out loud comedy. This metafictional romp had us rolling with laughter thanks to its energetic cast, wild set-pieces, and clever self awareness. It’s downright riotous and brilliantly bizarre at times.

Anaconda (2025) is easily the hardest I have laughed in a cinema in years. This movie is so insanely laugh out loud funny, it delivers absolutely wild physical comedy, hilariously self-aware meta comedy, and an energetic cast that holds nothing back. You will have so much fun!

This movie is NOT a reboot of the 1997 film. The premise is that Jack Black’s character ‘Doug’ is a struggling film director who gave up on his dreams of filmmaking to make wedding videos instead. When his childhood best friend (Paul Rudd) reveals to him that he has the rights to the 1997 film ‘Anaconda’, they pledge to journey to the jungle to remake the movie.

The result is a hilariously self aware movie about the process of making a movie. Much like The Player (1992) or the recent Apple TV Show The Studio, it’s packed with cleverly sharp jokes about Hollywood, the filmmaking process, and reflexive commentary on the tiresome tropes of reboots and remakes. In doing so, it manages to buck the trend that all other remakes face, which is that it not tiresome at all. Anaconda is a fresh, lively, and manically energetic comedy.

It’s also filled with insane set pieces because alongside the clever meta-narrative of making a movie within a movie, the main characters do actually embark on a mission where they face real wild animals, gold-hunting terrorists, and even a giant snake. This mix of clever humour with genuinely huge-scale physical comedy means that the film never feels slow, in fact it hardly gives you a moment to breathe. It constantly throws at you quippy dialogue, insane twists, and well-directed action sequences that are as exhilarating as they are funny.

If you want a classic no-frills comedy that is massive in scale and unrelenting in laughter, please go see this movie. See it with family, see it with friends, it is a guaranteed fun time.
