Spider-Man: Brand New Day is Tom Holland’s best outing as the character in a more mature, reflective story. This vibrant film brings Peter Parker back down to earth to face his own interior struggle.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man film series following Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers (who also wrote the first three Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland).Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day proves that Holland has taken the time to develop a more nuanced, emotionally complex Peter Parker that resonates with audiences on a human level. That is because for the first time, he plays a mature, reflective, and sometimes even angry Spider-Man that feels so much more real, so much more intelligent, and so much more emotionally reflexive than ever before.
The film’s emotional core brilliantly investigates the dangers of prolonged social isolation, and denying parts of one’s inherent nature. Parker is the perfect canvas for describing these interior struggles. A strong emotional through-line about Peter dealing with his loneliness, as well as a decently resonant villain that marries up to that theme make for a compelling story.
The choice to focus on such a complex villain works well because it manages to tie their struggle back to Peter’s own emotional arc. However, it requires such a hefty narrative set-up that it defocuses the story from Peter’s own journey in a film that could have done more to progress his development.
While Brand New Day does feel like a new step for Peter Parker, it would have done better to truly give him the room to step away from his past. Instead, the script lingers on reconjuring high school memories and misses the chance to focus on a seperate chapter of Peter’s life.
Destin Daniel Cretton’s direction is magnificent, particularly in how he captures the bustling essence of New York, the scale of the city’s skyline, and the vibrant red of Spider-Man’s suit during high-contrast nighttime sequences. The result is the creation of a Spider-Man that stylistically, resonates a lot more strongly with a fully formed version of the original character from the comci books, being especially reminiscent of the early 2000s stories by J Michael Straczynski.
Spider-Man Brand New Day is a wonderfully refreshing and introspective film that Holland’s Peter Parker deserves. While it’s script could have taken bolder risks in crafting the arc of it’s lead, the visual style, strong story beats and standout performance make it worthwhile.
