The Mandalorian and Grogu Review: Jon Favreau returns Star Wars to the big screen with glorious action that’s somewhat restrained by a piecemeal script with varied character motivations

As Star Wars returns to the big screen for the first time in 7 years, it’s great to see a director like Jon Favreau, along with producer Dave Filoni bring their genuine love to the franchise. They clearly have deep knowledge and respect for the world Lucas created so many decades ago, and bring an interesting flare to the corner of the Star Wars universe that they pioneered with their Disney+ television series that kicked off The Mandalorian’s story.

In bringing Mando and Grogu to the big screen, Favreau had a mammoth task before him. Firstly, to translate characters that fans know from three seasons of television to a movie while still keeping it open for new viewers to enjoy without prior knowledge. Second, to elevate those characters and stories to a scale worthy of a film. And finally, to continue the legacy of Star Wars on the big screen with a story that offers themes, characters and action worthy of what this franchise has become known for.

In doing so, Favreau achieves a commendable feat. The film offers some excellent action, impressively large-scale (and creative) set pieces, and a majestic musical score by Ludwig Göransson. However, it is sometimes held back by a piecemeal script with underdeveloped characters and a slower plot motivation through its largely disparate three acts.

Still worth watching to see the way Mando glides through the glorious cyberpunk aesthetics of Nal Hutta and the mammoth 1.43 IMAX scenes of his spaceship entering hyperspace.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is in cinemas from the 22nd of May, and in Australian cinemas from the 21st of May.
