In exciting news for Australian fans of the Avatar franchise, one of the world’s most visionary directors, James Cameron will attend the Sydney Premiere of his new film Avatar: Fire and Ash. He will walk the blue carpet at IMAX Sydney on Monday 15 December 2025.
The Oscar®-winning filmmaker has forged a career at the intersection of blockbuster and auteur filmmaking, known for his incredibly large-scale and futuristic films. His best-known works rank among the most popular and highest grossing films of all time, including Avatar (2009), it’s sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Titanic (1997), which are the first, third and fourth highest grossing films of all time respectively.
Cameron is also known for his strong advocacy of environmental sustainability, a recurring theme in his films that are often set underwater or in a near-future reeling from climate degradation. One of his earliest films, The Abyss, explored themes of nuclear threats and environmental conservation.

The Avatar films are similarly focused on environmental themes, with the Na’vi, the native species of Pandora being subject to human exploitation of their planet for natural resources after humans have pummelled earth’s natural environment to the point of destruction. Excitingly, Cameron says that Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third instalment in the franchise, will return to planet earth to give audiences more insight into the dystopian state of the planet.
With Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family. The film, which has a screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and a story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salern.
James Cameron will attend the Sydney Premiere at the IMAX Sydney cinema, which was newly opened in November 2023 after nearly seven years of state-of-the-art rebuilding and renovations.

The new cinema boasts a dual-laser 4K projection system, and a square screen capable of showing films at the full 1.43 expanded aspect ratio. At 692 square meters, IMAX Sydney is the second-largest cinema screen in Australia (only narrowly beaten by IMAX Melbourne at 736 sqm).
Avatar: Fire and Ash will feature an expanded 1.90 aspect ratio, smaller than signature IMAX films like Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey, but boasting high-frame rate visuals presented in IMAX 3D.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will open exclusively in Australian cinemas on December 18, 2025.
